Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are set to return in the highly anticipated sequel to Freaky Friday, now officially titled Freakier Friday. The announcement was made at the D23 Expo, and the excitement around the sequel has been palpable.
The film will bring back Lohan as Anna Coleman and Curtis as her mother, Tess Coleman, continuing their story from the original 2003 movie. According to Deadline, both actresses were at the D23 event in Anaheim, California, on August 9, 2024, where they shared their enthusiasm for the project. Lohan described the sequel as “more fun” and “more emotional,” emphasizing that the film is a tribute to the love fans have shown over the years. Curtis added that returning to these roles feels like “picking up” where they left off, which she finds “really beautiful.”
Freakier Friday will introduce a “multigenerational twist” to the beloved story. The plot picks up years after Tess and Anna’s original body switch, this time exploring the challenges of blending two families as Anna now has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. The official logline hints that Tess and Anna’s adventure with magic fortune cookies will continue, suggesting that “lightning might indeed strike twice.”
Nisha Ganatra is directing the sequel, with Jordan Weiss writing the script. Disney Studios has teased the film with a caption on Instagram: “Things just got freakier. #FreakierFriday, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, is coming to theaters in 2025.”
The cast also includes Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Stephen Tobolowsky, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Julia Butters, and Rosalind Chao.
In a previous interview with Good Morning America, Lohan hinted that the sequel would be even “freakier” than fans might expect. She spoke positively about reuniting with the cast and enjoying a fun and supportive atmosphere on set.
Fans of the original film can look forward to a new chapter in the Freaky Friday saga, filled with humor, heart, and the signature charm of its leading stars.
