James McAvoy, known for his portrayal of Professor X since 2011’s “X-Men: First Class,” shared with Variety that he’s always open to reprising the role if the project is worthwhile. He emphasized that a good story and role are crucial factors for his interest.

“I’ve always said, if there’s a good role, if there’s a good opportunity to tell a good story, I’m always going to be interested in it, no matter whether it’s something I’ve done before or something completely brand new,” McAvoy said. “If there’s good material, I’m always ready to respond. I’m always ready. Ever ready! Actor ready! It’s got to be good, and they’ve got to want to do that, so it’s all hypotheticals.”

McAvoy expressed this sentiment during an interview at the Variety Studio, presented by Google TV, at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. When asked if he had seen Marvel’s latest movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, McAvoy admitted he hadn’t seen it yet but was aware he would appear in the credits. He humorously noted that he knew he wouldn’t be in the film itself, saying, “I knew I was going to be in the credits. I demanded. [Laughs] No. If there was a world, they clearly threw that idea out the window before calling me, so no.”

McAvoy was at Comic-Con to promote his latest horror film, “Speak No Evil,” alongside Director James Watkins and co-star Mackenzie Davis. This movie is a remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name and follows an American couple and their daughter who face a terrifying ordeal during what was supposed to be an idyllic vacation with a British family.

McAvoy, who has a knack for horror, having starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” and “Glass,” described “Speak No Evil” as a film filled with “lots of laughter” and intense “cranking of tension.” He praised Watkins for creating a film that builds tension over an hour and a half before culminating in a dramatic and explosive final 20 minutes.

When asked about his watch list, McAvoy mentioned that “Deadpool & Wolverine” is at the top, stating, “I’ve definitely got to see ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’”
