Is “Outer Range“ cancelled after two seasons?

Prime Video has canceled Outer Range after two seasons.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Outer Range has been canceled by Prime Video, ending the show. This news came out less than two months after the second season was released on May 16. We don’t know yet on whether another streaming service would pick up the show or not.

Why did Prime Video cancel “Outer Range?”

The cancellation of Outer Range by Prime Video is surprising, given that the series performed fairly well, even if it never matched the popularity of hits like Fallout or Reacher. Its first season made Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series for five weeks, and as of June 2, its second season had been on the chart for three weeks. According to Reelgood, Outer Range was the sixth most popular streaming TV show in the last week of May, right after its second season premiered.

Critics often praised Outer Range, especially for the performances of Josh Brolin and Imogen Poots. The first season, which premiered in 2022, was lauded for its unique Western sci-fi mix but faced criticism for having too many subplots. Despite this, it earned a respectable 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was renewed for a second season with Charles Murray taking over as showrunner.

The second season received even better reviews, with improved character development and a deeper dive into the show’s quirks, pushing its Rotten Tomatoes score to 92%. Given its solid performance and positive reviews, the cancellation is puzzling. One possible reason might be the high production costs and the salaries of its star-studded cast outweighing its financial returns. As of now, Prime Video has not provided an explanation, leaving fans to speculate on the reasons behind the decision.

Outer Range is available for streaming on Prime Video.
