Tom Cruise’s MTV Awards speech set new standards. The actor, 60, received best performance in a movie for the popular sequel Top Gun: Maverick last year during the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards broadcast on Sunday night.
Cruise was shown inside a fighter jet flying high in the sky wearing sunglasses and speaking into a headset in a tape thanking viewer for the fan-voted honour. He was travelling aboard the aircraft with his golden popcorn prize.
He said, “Thank you so much for this honour. I produce these flicks for you. I cherish you. I enjoy amusing you. There is simply no finer feeling than realising how much you value something and how much you enjoy it.
He continued by promoting his next action movie Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which hits theatres on July 12. He described it as a “wild ride.”
You have a lovely summer, Cruise continued. Once more, I appreciate you letting me amuse you. It’s an unquestionable honour. We will meet you at the theatre.
Austin Butler (Elvis), Florence Pugh (Don’t Worry Darling), Keke Palmer (Nope), and Michael B. Jordan (Creed III) were the other candidates in this category.
Top Gun: Maverick had the most nominations for films this year going into the ceremony, while Stranger Things and The Last of Us had the most nominations for scripted television, each with six.
Drew Barrymore, the host, abruptly quit her position on Thursday in support of the current Hollywood writers strike, forcing a change in the awards show’s original live format. While the show was airing, Barrymore, who had pledged to host it again in 2024, continued to make appearances in previously taped routines.
The winners of the evening, including Pedro Pascal, Jennifer Coolidge, the Vanderpump Rules cast, and others, accepted their prizes in pre-recorded speeches.
The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards will be broadcast live on MTV as well as simultaneously on BET, BETHer, Comedy Central, CMT, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, and VH1.
