NEW YORK – The highly anticipated Broadway revival of Othello has swiftly become one of the most sought-after tickets, drawing audiences eager to witness powerhouse performances by Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal. The production, which opened on March 23 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, marks the first Broadway staging of Shakespeare’s tragedy in over four decades.
Washington takes on the role of Othello, a revered Marine Corps general whose trust is manipulated by his subordinate, Iago, played by Gyllenhaal. Incensed over being passed up for a promotion, Iago cunningly sows seeds of doubt in Othello’s mind, leading him to suspect his wife, Desdemona (Molly Osborne), of infidelity with Lieutenant Cassio (Andrew Burnap).
Critics have praised the cast’s performances, particularly Osborne’s portrayal of Desdemona’s anguish and Burnap’s charismatic yet tragic Cassio. Kimber Elayne Sprawl also delivers a compelling performance as Emilia, whose growing frustration with societal injustices resonates powerfully.
Washington, known for his extensive Shakespearean repertoire, initially appears somewhat hesitant in his delivery but gradually settles into the role, capturing Othello’s mounting insecurities and eventual descent into fury. However, it is Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of Iago that commands attention. His nuanced performance balances quiet calculation with intense resentment, solidifying his place as a formidable stage actor.
Despite the cast’s excellence, director Kenny Leon’s modernized staging has received mixed reactions, with some critics questioning its lack of distinct vision. While minimalist set designs and contemporary costumes attempt to reimagine the classic, they risk overshadowing the play’s thematic depth.
Othello runs at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre through June 8, 2025.
