After six years on Grey’s Anatomy, Chris Carmack shared insights into his journey on the long-running medical drama, describing how it took time to truly feel part of the ensemble. Speaking on the Call It What It Is podcast on March 24, the actor recalled that despite joining the series in 2015 as a potential love interest for Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), he was uncertain about his character’s future.
Carmack admitted that initially, he did not feel like Grey Sloan Memorial was the right place for him, noting how established the show and its cast were. It wasn’t until he had spent several years on set that he no longer felt like “the new guy,” a sentiment he shared with longtime cast member Kevin McKidd. He clarified that his unease was not due to any discomfort caused by the cast or crew but rather the sheer longevity of the series and the depth of existing relationships.
Jessica Capshaw, who portrayed Arizona Robbins from season 5, echoed Carmack’s experience, recalling that the show’s early years had a perceived “hierarchy” among cast members based on their tenure. Camilla Luddington, who joined in 2012 as Dr. Jo Wilson, agreed that such a structure was once evident but suggested it no longer exists.
Despite his initial apprehension, Carmack expressed admiration for the show’s cast, describing them as exceptionally talented. Reflecting on his tenure, he noted that the deep-rooted character relationships now come naturally, enhancing performances without requiring extensive preparation.
Grey’s Anatomy continues to air on ABC, maintaining its status as one of television’s most enduring medical dramas.
