Charlotte Lawrence is making her TV debut in Apple TV+’s Bad Monkey, marking a significant step in her career after years of working as a model, singer, and songwriter. The show, based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel, sees Charlotte taking on the role of Caitlin Stripling, a rebellious former model and recovering addict who suspects her stepmother of killing her father.
In a recent interview with Decider, Charlotte shared her excitement about the role and how she overcame her initial reluctance to pursue acting. Despite being the daughter of Bill Lawrence, a well-known TV creator behind hits like Scrubs and Ted Lasso, Charlotte didn’t rely on her father’s influence to land the role. She revealed that she auditioned for Bad Monkey on her own, without telling her dad, emphasizing her determination to prove herself as an actor through hard work.
Charlotte acknowledged the privilege of being Bill Lawrence’s daughter but expressed her commitment to working hard and carving out her own path. She explained that while music was her first love, and she enjoyed performing in musical theater and plays as a child, she developed a strong resistance to acting as a teenager. However, once she gave acting a chance, she quickly fell in love with it.
To prepare for her role in Bad Monkey, Charlotte took acting classes and worked with a coach to hone her skills. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and acknowledged that she has a lot to learn. Working alongside talented actors like Meredith Hagner, Rob Delaney, and Vince Vaughn was a “pinch me” moment for her, particularly since Vince Vaughn has been her favorite comedic actor since childhood.
Charlotte is represented by IMG Models and has been featured in magazines like Teen Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. In addition to her modeling and acting career, she has made a name for herself in the music industry, collaborating with Kaskade on the single “Cold as Stone” and releasing her debut EP, Young, in 2018. Her second EP, Charlotte, was released in March 2021.
Playing Caitlin in Bad Monkey was a dream role for Charlotte, as she was drawn to the character’s complexity and fiery personality. She enjoyed adding depth to Caitlin and creating a backstory for her. The role also allowed her to cover Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” for the soundtrack, making the experience even more special.
Charlotte is eager to continue exploring acting and different genres, hoping that Bad Monkey is just the beginning of her on-screen career. New episodes of Bad Monkey premiere on Wednesdays on Apple TV+
