Even though Avengers 5 is less than two years away, the movie’s journey has been rocky. The film, initially titled The Kang Dynasty, faced a major setback with Jonathan Majors’ arrest and assault sentencing. This unexpected twist cost the movie its main antagonist and complicated the entire Multiverse Saga.

Adding to the troubles, director Destin Daniel Cretton, known for Shang-Chi, has also left the project. This leaves Michael Waldron, who worked on Doctor Strange 2 and took over the script from Jeff Loveness, as the only key figure still attached to the film. Waldron’s previous experience with multiverses in Loki and Doctor Strange 2 seemed promising, but now he’s stepped away, forcing Marvel to restart the production process. With filming slated to begin in March 2025 and continue until August, Marvel has about eight months to find a new writer and polish the script—a tight deadline.

So, with no writer, no director, and no villain, the situation is looking pretty chaotic for Marvel’s next big Avengers installment.

Who could take over directing Avengers 5?

As for who might direct Avengers 5, there are several possibilities. Sam Raimi is a fan favorite, but there’s no current indication that he’s in the running. Shawn Levy, known for his recent work, is a popular choice and could be a strong candidate if Deadpool & Wolverine performs well.

Another option could be Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who have significant experience with the Multiverse Saga through Moon Knight and Loki season 2. Matt Shakman, who’s busy with The Fantastic Four, is another potential contender.

A more ambitious choice could be Jordan Peele, who reportedly discussed directing a Marvel film but didn’t seem to reach an agreement.

At this point, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige might consider reaching out to the Russo brothers for help, given their successful track record with the Avengers films.
