Deadpool & Wolverine is finally hitting theaters, and while it’s definitely a Ryan Reynolds showcase, critics seem to be onboard with its self-described role as a sugary, superhero successor to Battlefield Earth, a comparison Reynolds made back in May.

The film lives up to its hype with an impressive array of cameos, a blend of meta-humor and gore, and a clear nod to the Fox era of Marvel films. One of the most anticipated moments is the long-awaited showdown between Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Tyler Mane’s Sabretooth, a duel that fans have been waiting to see since the early 2000s.

Are Sabretooth and Wolverine Brothers?

Whether or not Sabretooth and Wolverine are brothers depends on the continuity you’re considering. In Tyler Mane’s portrayal in the 2000 X-Men film, the two characters are not related by blood. They are adversaries simply because they are on opposite sides: Wolverine is with the X-Men, while Sabretooth is aligned with the Brotherhood of Mutants.

In the comics, they aren’t brothers either. Their rivalry stems from their shared history in the Weapon X program. Wolverine wants to forget this past, but Sabretooth keeps dragging it up.

It’s only in X-Men Origins: Wolverine that they are depicted as half-brothers, sharing the same father, Thomas Logan. This film shows that after Thomas kills the man Logan believes to be his father, Logan kills Thomas and he and Victor, aka Sabretooth, flee together. However, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is often dismissed by fans, so for most continuity purposes, Sabretooth and Wolverine are not considered brothers.

Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters, so if you’re excited about this epic clash and more, you can catch it on the big screen.
