Describing that time as a period when “the hits just kept coming,” Ashmore noted that he and Kate had attended therapy in an attempt to salvage their relationship. Since Kate is a therapist herself, therapy had been a major part of their efforts to make the marriage work. However, after a year of counseling, they ultimately realized that their relationship could not be repaired.

The actor admitted that the aftermath of their split was particularly tough. He shared that selling the family home was an emotional challenge, as it represented the true end of their life together. The experience left him in a deep state of depression for months.

Ashmore credited his twin brother, Shawn Ashmore, for providing support during that difficult time. He acknowledged that grief and emotional struggles sometimes surface unexpectedly, recalling moments when he would break down without warning. Despite the hardships, Ashmore has since been working through his emotions and moving forward.
