Veteran actor and comedian Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, better known as Jagdeep passes away at the age of 81 at his residence in Andheri, Mumbai on Wednesday. The cause of the death is still not known yet.

Jagdeep had started his career as child artist extra in B.R Chopra’s Afsana and then went on to play few more roles as a child artist in films like Ab Dilli Door Nahin, Munna, Do Bigha Zamin and Hum Panchi Ek Daal Ke. He was also rewarded by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru for his outstanding performance in Hum Panchi Ek Daal Ke.

The late actor is popularly known for his role in Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay, where he played the character of ‘Soorma Bhopali’. From here he gained the stardom and appeared on more than 400 films. His presence as an actor was seen in the films like Purana Mandir(1984) and Salim Khan’s Andaz Apna Apna(1994). Later on, he also directed a movie Soorma Bhopali with the character as a protagonist.

Along with Bollywood actor Javed Jaffery and Television Producer/Director Naved Jaffrey, Jagdeep has one more daughter, Muskaan Jaffrey from his second wife Nazima.
