Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan’s Coolie No. 1, which is inspired by Govinda and Karisma Kapoor’s 1995 film of the same name, was expected to release in the theaters in May 2020, but as the other victims of the pandemic, even Coolie No.1 got postponed. Now the question is if there are chances that the film might release directly on OTT platform.
The wait for the weekend releases are over. Now one can find their favourite new releases on OTT platforms on weekdays. In the grip of the pandemic the film industry is forced to release its all upcoming movies on OTT. A film critic in one of his column in Open Magazine has hinted that Varun and Sara’s Coolie No 1 may premiere directly on the OTT, if theaters don’t open soon.
The digital rights of the movie is owned by Amazon Prime Video. According to the sources, the talks are going on between the producers and Amazon Prime Video for the direct release on OTT, but no official statement is out yet. Rajeev Masand hinted on the release of Coolie No. 1on Disney+Hotstar as well, but again nothing’s concrete. As the movie’s theatrical release is postponed, its digital release is also on hold.
With so many filmmakers already taking the OTT platform for a roll, one cannot rule out the possibility of the rumors. The OTT release list is long one in the pandemic. The upcoming ones are Jhanvi Kapoor’s Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Akshay Kumar’s Laxmmi Bomb, Ajay Devgn’s Bhuj: The Pride of India and Vidya Balan’s Shakuntala Devi.
