Ustad Rashid Khan passed away today on the 9th of January at the age of 55. The musician took his last breath in Kolkata, where he was on a ventilator in ICU. He was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer in a hospital there.
The singer passed away in the afternoon and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
The classical musician belongs to the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana and was a great-grandson of the legendary singer Inayat Hussain Khan, who founded the Gharana.
The Chief Minister of Kolkata visited the late singer and released a statement saying, “I heard about his death. This is a great loss for the entire country and the entire music fraternity. I am in a lot of pain as I still can’t believe that Rashid Khan is no more.”
Khan’s health deteriorated when he suffered a cerebral attack last month. He has been on a ventilator since then.
The Chief Minister also stated that he would be given a gun salute before his last rites were performed. He will be taken to Rabindra Sadan, where his fans can pay their heartfelt condolences.
Ustad Rashid Khan was known for his impeccable contributions to the music industry. Well-known songs such as Aaoge Jab Tum Saajna from the 2007 film Jab We Met and Allah Hi Rehem song from My Name is Khan are some of his incredible works.
The singer was awarded the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006. He was also attributed with the Padma Bhushan in 2022 among other honors.
