The Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah is hospitalised. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and there was a patch found in his lungs for which is undergoing treatment currently. As per the Bombay Times, “he has been in the hospital for two days and is under medical supervision. He was brought in for pneumonia. His condition is stable and is responding well to the treatment.” So let’s recall some top movies of Naseeruddin Shah.
1. Jaane bhi do yaaro
This film was shot in 1983. This comic satire touched every possible social issue prevalent at that time. The movie shows the journey of two struggling photographers, the satire in dialogues and presentation of characters led this movie worth watching. This movie was Naseeruddin’s first film with a comic role and everyone loved this film. The main attention is the situations created in the movie where every character tries to complete their task by any means and comedy of errors just take place with the right timing.
2. Masoom
In this film, Naseeruddin is a family man. This movie depicts how a family gets broken because of an extramarital affair the lead had during his early marriage days. The tranquillity of their life is interrupted when DK (the hero) receives word that he has a son, the result of an affair. The star cast of this movie was Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi in lead roles along with Tanuja, Supriya Pathak, Saeed Jaffrey.
3. Iqbal
This movie is about a cricket-obsessed deaf and mute boy from a remote Indian village as he aims to overcome barriers to become a cricketer and fulfil his dream of playing for the Indian Cricket Team. He was coached by Naseeruddin. Kapil Dev was also included in this movie. This film received the National Film Award for Best Film on ‘Other Social Issues’.
4. A Wednesday
This film shows an about-to-retire police commissioner narrating a sequence of events that unfolded on a particular Wednesday. The awareness of the incident exists only in his mind and in those of several individuals who were involved, willingly and unwillingly, and how those events affected the lives of all the concerned people. Naseeruddin was the ‘aam aadmi’, who decided that terrorism has taken way further from the lives of common people, decides to take law into his own hands.
5. Sparsh
This film stars Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi playing the characters of a visually impaired principal and a sighted teacher in a school for the blind, where they fall in love. This film had won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
6. Bazaar
This film depicts the plight of Muslim women in Hyderabad that was forced into the practice of ‘bride buying’ for rich men from the Gulf countries. Naseeruddin Shah brilliantly plays the role of Salim, a poet in love with a married woman Najma played by Smitha Patil.
7. Mirch Masala
This movie is about the oppression of women in the villages of the pre-independence era. Naseeruddin Shah played a role of an arrogant, promiscuous and evil Subedar (tax collector) who wants to make Sonbai yield to his sexual desires.
8. Sarfarosh
This movie starred Aamir Khan and Naseeruddin Shah. In this film, Aamir Khan played the role of Supercop. While Naseeruddin played the role of singer cum Indo-Pak terrorist, Gulfam Hassan. Naseeruddin displayed a role of a person who was torn between two countries after the partition. He expressed the pain of not being accepted insider of the country quite beautifully.
