Tahira Kashyap fought a fierce battle against breast cancer in 2018. The filmmaker was diagnosed with Stage 0 breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy. During the treatment, she went bald and had no qualms about sharing her bald photo on social media. However, the post did not sit with her parents.
“My parents got really upset with me when I put up my bald picture (after the cancer diagnosis). A bald look for a woman is somehow synonymous with disaster, so they refused to talk to me and were forcing me to take it down,” Tahira shared during an interview with Filmfare.
Tahira, who is known for directing 2024 film Sharmajee Ki Beti, refused to delete her post. She recalled putting up a defence saying, “But I said, ‘I am not doing that. I am celebrating right now, which you need to understand’. They actually thought I had lost it. They were like, ‘How can you celebrate a physical illness?'”
In order to convince her parents, the filmmaker video called them and asked them to be happy for her. She recalled that she did not know how to talk to them so she chose to just video call and show herself to her mother. Upon saying that this is how she looks now, and she also wears goggles, her mother laughed. She then explained it to her that its just life, and she is happy, and requested her to be happy for her, however, her mother still seemed “clueless about ‘feeling happy’.”
