South superstar Thalapathy Vijay, who is now preparing for the premiere of his highly anticipated flick Leo, has found himself in legal trouble. The first song from the film, ‘Naa Ready,’ was released on June 22, and while it has already become a chartbuster, it has brought Vijay and the Leo team into legal difficulties.
For smoking in the song, Vijay and the creators of ‘Leo’ have been sued. An activist from Chennai has accused the actor of encouraging drug use.
The activist sought the court to prosecute the superstar and the producers under the Narcotics Control Act.
According to reports, a Chennai-based activist named RTI Selvam has filed a complaint against Vijay and the makers of Leo for “glorifying drug usage” and “rowdyism” in the song ‘Naa Ready.’
The performer and the producers have yet to issue an official remark regarding the controversy.
This isn’t the first time Vijay has been chastised for depicting the use of cigarettes and tobacco in his flicks. Anbumani Ramadoss, head of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), has advised the actor not to advocate smoking because children and youngsters watch his films.
A significant issue emerged in Tollywood in 2007 about performers smoking on screen. Vijay had then agreed to collaborate with the government and comply with their anti-smoking campaigns by avoiding presenting smoking scenes in the film.
Anbumani has reminded Vijay of his commitment, saying that the youth watch his films and get inspiration from him, and that it is the actor’s social responsibility to “protect the public” from smoking.
“Vijay should refrain from smoking scenes in movies, as he promised in 2007 and 2012,” he added.
