Shah Rukh Khan reveals the backstory of his iconic pose; Actor credits it to late choreographer Saroj Khan

Is there any instance when someone has tried imitating Shah Rukh Khan, all he does is stand tall and stretches his arms a little, maybe tilts his body a little in the air and looks into the invisible audience and voila the ladies have melted. Through movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham or Mohabbatein, the actor has garnered a huge fan following across the globe particularly for the specific posture. More recently, on a live chat at the Locarno Film Festival, the 58-year-old actor explained how he came to learn the now-famous pose.

For instance, a fan of the actor requested him to explain the backstory of his timeless pose. After carefully trying to remember the occurrence in detail, SRK said, “I think what happened is in Indian cinema, especially during the 90s, dip was a real thing.” Khan then stood up to demonstrate the dip and as a joke, asked his audience to sing a song for him.

Then the actor added, “I couldn’t do dip. Because of this, I was quite ashamed of myself. All night, I kept practicing it in my room. The next morning, I remember saying to my choreographer Saroj Khan, ‘Ma’am, ready?’ She said, ‘Yes, but as you cannot do dips, you just stand there and put your arms out. I did dips for her and she was like, ‘No, no, don’t do it. It doesn’t look nice on you.’ So, she didn’t let me do the dip and I had to put my arms out.”

The actor talked further about how he just kept repeating the step on various sets and eventually it turned into his epic move.
