The Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson has acted aggressively by filing a lawsuit against Disney studios for streaming the film online. According to her Disney breached the contract by releasing the film on Disney Plus, their flagship online streaming platform. She accused Disney of going for a digital release that violated the contract as mentioned for a theatrical release. Disney replied to her claim by referring to it as ” sad and distressing”. To which Scarlett’s Johansson’s agent responded, “They have shamelessly and falsely accused Ms Johansson of being insensitive to the global Covid pandemic.”
The Avengers actress is getting a lot of praise for her stance against Disney, it includes cinema greats like master filmmaker Christopher Nolan saying, ” In 2021, they’ve got some of the top filmmakers in the world, they’ve got some of the biggest stars in the world who have worked for years in some cases on these projects very close to their hearts that are meant to be big-screen experiences. They’re meant to be out there for the widest possible audiences … and now they’re being used as a loss-leader for the streaming service – for the fledgling streaming service – without any consultation.” to ETOnline.
Women in Film and Time’s Up organizations supported the actress by calling the response of Disney, “gender character attack”. Scarlett made claims that the studio is irresponsible by releasing the film in times when most of the theatres are still closed. According to the lawsuit, the studio should have waited for the restrictions to ease down.
