Ranveer Singh files police complaint over deepfake video

On Monday, it was announced that Ranveer Singh had filed a police report over a deepfake video showing him backing a political party.

After Rashmika Mandanna, Alia Bhatt, and Nora Fatehi’s deepfake videos went viral, there was major outrage about technological misuse and the lack of proper legal protections that allowed this harmful use of artificial intelligence (AI) to continue to grow.

Ranveer Singh is becoming the latest victim of the industry-wide epidemic. In a recent development, Ranveer Singh’s official spokesman acknowledged that, based on a police complaint, a FIR has been filed for further investigation by the Cyber Crime Cell.

In a statement, the spokesman stated, “Yes, we have filed the police complaint, and FIR has been lodged against the handle that was promoting the AI-generated deepfake video of Mr. Ranveer Singh.”

In a fake, AI-generated deepfake video of the actor, he is shown allegedly expressing his political opinions. While the video from the actor’s recent trip to Varanasi is authentic, the audio is from an AI-enabled vocal clone of the actor.

In the video, Singh is seen asking people to vote for “Nayay (justice)” in the current Lok Sabha elections. However, it was eventually revealed that the viral video was altered and edited.

Ranveer addressed the matter and cautioned everyone on social media, writing on X, “Deepfake se bacho dostonnnn.”

Earlier this month, another deepfake video of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan went viral on social media, showing him promoting a political party. After the video went viral, Mumbai police responded and filed a FIR against an unidentified individual.

Khan’s office filed the FIR at the Khar Police Station under pertinent parts of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), such as 419 (impersonation), 420 (cheating), and other sections of the Information Technology Act.
