Laapataa Ladies, an acclaimed film by director Kiran Rao, has been selected as India’s official submission for the Oscars. Speaking on the development, Academy Award-winning producer, Guneet Monga, has stated that there needs to be more movies with U.S. distribution going forward for Oscar consideration. She says, “The committee here constantly feels that we should send our best film, as if they are giving the award. But you have to send a film that has American distribution, period. It’s an American award.”

In a nutshell, Laapataa Ladies was pitted against Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light- an innovative film, that was also India’s first in decades in the official competition category at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the prestigious Grand Prix award.

In an interview recently to Mid-Day, Guneet mentions how crucial an American distributor is to films competing for the Academy Awards. She informs that to make proper choices for India in which a film is selected for the Oscars, getting good American distribution would be quite important.

Meanwhile, the makers of Laapataa Ladies are celebrating as it has got selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025, bringing pride to the nation. This delightful comedy-drama, directed by talented Kiran Rao, is dotted with a fresh lineup of young actors: Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Pratibha Ranta, alongside seasoned performers like Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan.
