Dimple Kapadia was only 16 when she became an overnight star with the 1973 film ‘Bobby’. Soon after the success of the film, she quit the industry to marry superstar Rajesh Khanna. She raised her two daughters Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna and made a comeback to films after a decade. Today the actress is celebrating her 63rd birthday. Known for her gorgeous looks, acting talent, and bold roles, Dimple has time and again stunned her fans with her performances in various Hindi films from the era of ’70s and 80s. As a child Dimple was extremely scared of her father. Nonetheless, at age 5 she declared to him that she wanted to be an actress as she was always a film buff.
She was introduced to acting by Raj Kapoor in the film ‘Bobby’ to debut opposite Rishi Kapoor. She was barely 16 at the time. ‘Bobby’ turned her into an iconic star and she was famously dating Rishi Kapoor at the time.
Soon after her breakup with Rishi Kapoor, she married superstar Rajesh Khanna when she was 15 going on 16. After marriage, she stopped acting.
Dimple was involved in a 11-year long love affair with her already married co-star Sunny Deol. Sunny had even given her the status of a wife notwithstanding his marriage. But this love affair ended with Sunny moving on.
She was one of the top 5 most commercially successful actresses of the 80s’ along with Sridevi, Madhuri, Meenakshi, and Jayapradha.
At the onset of the 90s’ she started experimenting with Arthouse cinema to explore her inner calling and potential. In 1992, she won a National Film Award for Best actress for her performance in ‘Rudaali’.
Although Dimple separated from Rajesh Khanna and was involved in a few affairs, she never remarried. On being asked if she would ever marry again, she said, “I’m very happy and content. Why do I need to get married again?”
She has two daughters from her marriage to Rajesh Khanna– Twinkle and Rinke. Both of them pursued a career in acting, although not as successfully as their mother.
