Olivia Culpo has opened up about experiencing a blood clot in the early weeks of her pregnancy, revealing details in a TikTok video shared on March 18. The 32-year-old model described how she had been left “bleeding everywhere” following the complication, known as a subchorionic hematoma.
The video, recorded on December 12 when she was nine weeks pregnant, showed Culpo explaining that she had been on strict bed rest after falling ill with pneumonia for two weeks. She shared that the hematoma developed towards the end of her illness, causing excessive bleeding.
Medical sources, including BabyCenter, describe a subchorionic hematoma as a condition where blood accumulates between the uterine wall and the chorion, the membrane surrounding the developing baby. Culpo, who announced her pregnancy with husband and NFL player Christian McCaffrey on March 10, recalled feeling “exhausted” but was relieved to hear her baby’s heartbeat during a doctor’s visit.
The doctor advised her to avoid travel and remain in bed, emphasizing the importance of rest. She also credited progesterone suppositories for maintaining a stable environment for her baby and ensuring proper placenta attachment. Expressing gratitude, she said she believed the medication was a key factor in sustaining her pregnancy and hoped her experience could help others facing similar complications.
Culpo and McCaffrey, 28, got married in June 2024 after dating for over four years. Previously, she had shared in an October 2023 TikTok video that she planned to remove her IUD immediately after their wedding to start trying for a baby.
