NCPCR demands ban on Netflix series Bombay Begums

Netflix has been given 24 hours by NCPCR from the time of the notice to remove Bombay Begums.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has asked Netflix to stop streaming Alankrita Shrivastava’s layered Bombay Begums. Apparently two Twitter handles condemning scenes related to the film’s youngest protagonist (Aadhya Anand) have come under the NCPCR’s scanner.

Objecting to the alleged inappropriate portrayal of children in the series, the commission said this type of content will not only pollute the young minds but may also result in abuse and exploitation of children.

The series involves minors indulging in casual sex and drug use.

“Netflix should take extra precaution while streaming any content in respect of the children or for the children and shall also refrain themselves from getting into such things,” the commission said in its notice.

“Therefore, you are directed to look into this matter and immediately stop streaming of this series and furnish a detailed action report within 24 hours, failing which the Commission will be constrained to initiate appropriate action pursuant to the provisions of Section 14 of the CPCR (Commission for Protection of Child Rights) Act, 2005,” the commission added.

According to Bollywood Hungama, when the entertainment portal contacted one of the actors, the actor revealed, “The inappropriate portrayal of children’ is such a nebulous term. Is the Commission aware of what goes on at the rave parties that teenagers regularly attend? In order to begin to solve the problems that plague our society we must first address those problems. And to address those problems we must first show them on screen. Right? No point in pretending they don’t exist.”
