The political and legal storm surrounding comedian Kunal Kamra continues to unfold, with Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar becoming the first high-ranking official to respond to the controversy. His remarks come after Shiv Sena workers vandalized Mumbai’s Habitat Studio in protest against Kamra’s “gaddar” jibe at Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde.

Maharashtra Govt’s First Response: ‘Speak Responsibly’

Speaking to the media, Ajit Pawar urged both politicians and public figures to exercise caution in their speech:

“No one should go beyond the law and the Constitution. One should speak within limits. Differences of opinion may exist, but care must be taken to ensure that the police department does not have to intervene due to their statements.”

While Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde have not yet issued public statements on the matter, the government’s initial response signals a call for restraint rather than outright condemnation of either side.

Shiv Sena Workers’ Rampage at Habitat Studio

Following the release of Kamra’s parody of ‘Bholi Si Surat’, which branded Shinde a ‘gaddar’ (traitor), a group of Shiv Sena supporters stormed the Habitat Studio, a well-known venue for stand-up comedy.

-Visuals from the attack showed workers destroying studio property—swinging chairs, breaking cameras, and damaging lights and speakers.

-Multiple FIRs have been filed against Kunal Kamra, including one based on a complaint from Maharashtra Minister Pratap Sarnaik.

Habitat Studio Temporarily Shuts Down Over Safety Concerns

In a heartfelt statement on Instagram, Habitat Studio announced its temporary closure, citing concerns over free speech, security, and repeated attacks on its property.

“We are shocked, worried, and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us. Artists are solely responsible for their views and creative choices, but we get blamed and targeted every time as if we are a proxy for the performer.”

The studio also referenced past controversies, including a previous backlash involving YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia.

Free Speech vs. Political Sensitivity: The Debate Continues

Kamra’s case once again highlights the fragile space for political satire in India. While some argue that comedians must be allowed to express their views freely, others believe that political figures should not be subjected to public ridicule beyond limits.

With legal battles, political pressures, and the shutdown of a key comedy venue, the controversy raises crucial questions about freedom of speech, artistic expression, and political intolerance in India.
