Lata Mangeshkar, popularly known as India’s Nightingale, turned 91 today. She is one of the best-known and most respected playback singers of India. She has also been bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 1989 by the Government of India. In the year 2001, the Nightingale of India was also awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour and is the second vocalist, after M. S. Subbulakshmi, to receive this award.
On her 91st birthday, it has been reported that Lata Mangeshkar has cancelled her birthday celebrations owing to the ongoing pandemic which has taken lives of lakhs of people all over the globe. According to Rachna Shah, Lata Mangeshkar’s niece, the playback singer is deeply concerned with the casualties following the COVID-19. In a talk with Bombay Times, she said “She told us that this was not the time for celebration. She wants to pray for those who lost their lives in the pandemic. She will be spending the day with her family members and will eat daal, rice and aloo ki sabzi for lunch.”
Following her birthday, Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his official Twitter handle and has wished the legendary singer on her birthday. He wrote, “Spoke to respected Lata Didi and conveyed birthday greetings to her. Praying for her long and healthy life. Lata Didi is a household name across the nation. I consider myself fortunate to have always received her affection and blessings.”
