Comedian Kunal Kamra has sparked controversy after referring to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor) during a stand-up performance in Mumbai. The remark, made as part of a parody song, triggered a sharp reaction from Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) workers, who vandalised the venue and demanded action against Kamra.

Following the incident, an FIR was registered against Shiv Sena Yuva Sena General Secretary Rahool Kanal and 19 others for allegedly vandalising the Habitat stand-up comedy set. The case has been filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Police Act. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel also filed an FIR against Kamra, issuing an ultimatum for an apology within two days. He warned that if Kamra did not comply, Shiv Sainiks would ensure he could not move about freely in Mumbai. Patel further stated that the issue would be raised in the Maharashtra Assembly, urging the home minister to take swift action against the comedian.

Party leaders dismissed Kamra as a “hired comedian” working for money, alleging that Shiv Sena (UBT) had no leaders left to speak for them, thus resorting to engaging comedians for political attacks. Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC condemned Kamra’s remarks, stating that making derogatory comments about the Chief Minister was not comedy but vulgarity. She also highlighted Shinde’s journey from being an autorickshaw driver to the state’s leadership as aspirational.

Opposition leaders, particularly from Shiv Sena (UBT), defended Kamra, calling the attack on the venue an act of cowardice. Aaditya Thackeray accused the Shinde faction of insecurity, while MP Sanjay Raut praised Kamra’s parody as “Kunal Ka Kamal.” Priyanka Chaturvedi also condemned the violence, stating that disagreements should not lead to physical attacks.

The incident has intensified political tensions in Maharashtra, with both sides using the controversy to reinforce their narratives ahead of crucial legislative sessions.
