Karan Johar’s iconic Bollywood film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Murkherji has been loved and appreciated by the fans even now. The director often seems to talk about the flawed gender politics that the movie associates with. Recently in an interview, KJO drew attention towards the gender politics happening in films and referred to Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal in his statement.
In a conversation with Film Companion, Karan revealed how the gender politics in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is very flawed as compared to his recent film i.e. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani. The director said that he has evolved now and has a better sense of understanding. He even said that there is Sandeep Reddy Vanga who does his own new thing.
Johar said, “The gender politics of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I understand, is incorrect as opposed to the gender politics of Rocky Aur Rani. Because now I have evolved, now I have understood.”
He further added, “Then you have someone like Sandeep Reddy Vanga telling you that ‘why are you listening to anybody? Just do your own thing!”
Karan Johar expressed that now he understands the impact of gender politics. Now he is the father of twins, a girl and a boy. He cannot tell his son to wear blue and his daughter to opt for pink. The director said he doesn’t want to make such mistakes. Also, he emphasized how boys are told not to cry. He stated it is okay for them to cry and let out their emotions.
On the professional front, Karan Johar recently directed Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. His next projects include Yodha, Jigra, Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam and Mr and Mrs Mahi.
Meanwhile, Animal was released on the 1st of December. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film features Rashmika Mandanna, Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Triptii Dimri in key roles.
