Eric Dane, the American actor best known for his roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, died at the age of 53 on February 19, 2026, after a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his family confirmed.

Dane’s death came almost 10 months after he publicly revealed his diagnosis of ALS, a progressive and fatal neurological disease. The family’s statement shared that he passed away peacefully after fighting the condition with courage and strength.

What Is ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)?

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a degenerative neurological disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The disease gradually breaks down motor neurons — the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. As these neurons die, the brain loses the ability to control muscle movement, leading to progressive weakness, paralysis, and eventually loss of essential functions such as speaking, swallowing, and breathing.

There is currently no cure for ALS, and life expectancy after diagnosis typically ranges from a few years to longer in some cases, depending on how rapidly the disease progresses.

Eric Dane’s Public ALS Diagnosis and Health Struggles

Dane first confirmed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, revealing that he had begun experiencing symptoms before seeking medical evaluation. He spoke honestly about the impact the disease had on his body, including the loss of function in his right arm and later increasingly severe symptoms.

Despite his diagnosis, Dane continued to work and remained focused on raising awareness about ALS. He appeared in interviews discussing his condition and shared heartfelt moments about navigating life with the disease alongside his family.
