The film industry is unpredictable business. In such a subject as that, there are no sure bets. However, some popular actors and movie makers can always make a film that appeals to audiences’ tastes. Conversely, there are ones who miss out for failing to understand what people want. But then there is this Indian director who was famous despite his unsuccessful films.

It is Ram Gopal Varma who holds the record for the greatest number of flops ever witnessed in Indian cinema. Since he debuted as a filmmaker in the late 80s, he has made 31 films in total. The surprising discovery, nevertheless, is that out of these 31, 26 were box office failures. This makes a good case for why only one of his movies would be termed as a blockbuster during his three decade-long career as a moviemaker. The 1998 release Satya represents his last genuine hit as none of them can be above average or semi hit but as far as good our memory serves us all he had done back then may actually be almost every third adult’s favourite.

Even though he does not have a good number of hits at the box office, Varma is considered to be one of the most influential directors of his time, referred to by his nickname RGV. This is because he has several cult classics like Shool, Satya, Company, Kaun, Rakta Charithra and Sarkar. Most of his films have either been flops in terms of collections or just average earners; however, they are considered as landmark movies in Indian film history.

In his career, Varma has had major successes, including Rangeela which was a commercial success, while Satya became popular slowly and steadily. His films being successful range from semi-hits such as Bhoot, Company, Sarkar up to blockbusters like Rangeela and Satya to sleeper hits like Satya and average earner films. Ram Gopal Varma is currently experiencing the most unsuccessful phase in his career because the last three movies were huge flops making less than even one crore rupees at the box office. Nobody wants to stake their bets on most of what he has recently produced so it has led renowned directors into starting releasing them directly online without going through any form of distribution.

There has been concern from some quarters over the maker of Rangeela and Satya for turning to soft pornographic content. It starred porn star Mia Malkova in 2018. His last movie, 12 O Clock (2015), has also been bashed by reviewers. His latest movies have been criticized for being more titillating as compared to his previous ones which criticized society while including themes like loneliness.ho ho
