David Schwimmer Opens Up About Disliking the Friends Theme Song
For many Friends fans, the show’s theme song, I’ll Be There for You by The Rembrandts, is instantly nostalgic, evoking memories of six inseparable friends navigating life in New York City. However, for David Schwimmer, who played Ross Geller, the iconic track wasn’t as beloved—at least not during the show’s peak.
Schwimmer recently shared his thoughts on Making a Scene, a podcast hosted by Matt Lucas and David Walliams. He admitted that the song, which became a cultural phenomenon, eventually began to irritate him.
“I’ll be really honest, there was a time for quite a while that just hearing the theme song would really… you know what I mean? I just had that reaction. I mean, I just had heard it so many times,” he said.
His feelings weren’t just about overexposure. Schwimmer explained that the song followed him everywhere, especially during interviews and public appearances. “Any time you’d go on a show or a talk show or an interview, that would be your intro song. So I just didn’t have the greatest response to it.”
Despite his mixed feelings, the theme song remains a beloved piece of television history. Friends, which aired from 1994 to 2004, remains one of the most-watched sitcoms worldwide. The show’s 2021 HBO Max reunion reignited fan love, proving its timeless appeal.
While Schwimmer’s response may surprise fans, it’s understandable—after years of hearing the same song repeatedly, even the most beloved tracks can lose their charm. The question remains: has time softened his stance, or will I’ll Be There for You always be an overplayed tune in his book?
