The case is related to a 2018 article in the tabloid newspaper that labelled the actor violent and abusive to his ex-wife Amber Heard. Whereas, the Caribbean actor Depp strongly denies the claims made in the article. Depp, the 57-year-old star, issued The Sun’s publisher, News Group Newspapers, and its executive editor, Dan Wootton, over an article Wootton wrote in April 2018 which tagged him as a “wife beater”.
On the fifth day of the hearing, Depp spoke about his medical problems that he faced while he was married to Heard. The actor revealed that after being treated for his severed finger in 2015, he contracted the killer bug MRSA. The injured finger in turn, claimed by Depp, was a result of Heard’s rage that made her throw a vodka bottle at him during a row in Australia in March 2015.
“I went back to LA to have surgery – they put a pin in my finger and I ended up catching MRSA, which is quite a painful disease,” Depp said.
The Caribbean actor also disclosed his finance details, which in turn revealed that in the past, Depp was in $100 million of debt. He further added that he got this bad news shortly before Heard’s 30th birthday party in 2016. Depp also claimed that the incident that The Sun’s lawyer, Wass quoted earlier in the fourth hearing, took place after Heard attacked Depp accusing him of ruining her party after he arrived late.
The accusations on Depp is based on a series of 14 incidents, in which Heard claims that Depp physically assaulted her. While the lawyer narrated one such incident, Depp in his testimony denied the incident saying he did not headbutt Heard in a row on December 15 2015. He further revealed in the court, Heard “violently attacked” him and was punching and hitting him but when he grabbed Heard’s arms to stop her hitting him their foreheads clashed.
“It was entirely accidental and not a headbutt,” said Depp.
After the lawyers presented a photo that allegedly showed Heard with black eyes, Depp exclaimed that he feels it is unlikely the clash of foreheads caused such an injury. To support Depp’s testimony, his lawyer David Sherborne revealed that Heard told a nurse over the phone her husband had headbutted her, was bruised and suffered a headache. Soon after she appeared on the James Corden show, and the next day, when a nurse visited Heard at home, the bruises she described disappeared.
But the nurse did notice Heard’s lip which was bleeding at the time, and Heard revealed it was a result of the assault two days earlier. Depp denying the claim told the court the bleeding was possibly a result of dry skin she’d picked at.
The next round of testimony was about an email Heard wrote to herself but never sent. The email was read in the court, She wrote, “The man I love and want to marry called me an embarrassment and a whore, among other things, in front of a plane full of people who did NOTHING before kicking me – kicking me in the back and then mocked me for crying about it immediately after.”
“I’ve given him a thousand sorrys and a thousand chances and couldn’t have been more supportive throughout. I am not going to live my future like this. I can’t sit back and be there when he finally kills himself. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That’s what I’m doing by staying in his life.” she added.
The incident described in the email was about Heard taking her husband on their private jet from Boston to Los Angeles back in 2014, during which Heard alleges Depp assaulted her.
Finally, a picture of Depp was revealed in the court which was taken by Heart. In the picture, Depp can be seen asleep on a sofa with a tub of melted ice cream in his lap. Depp’s lawyer told the court that Heard started taking pictures and videos of her injuries, with the motive of showing Depp what he had done to her the next morning, claiming that the actor would not be able to remember details of their fights. But Depp refused having seen any such pictures before, except this one with the ice cream tub.
Depp’s assistant Stephen Deuters, also took the stand to give his testimony. The assistant revealed that Depp could have been “unconscious through drink or drugs” when the picture was taken.
