You may have heard about the viral courier fraud prevalent in India, in which scammers target people by claiming that their ID card was used for illegal activities like narcotics or weapons smuggling. These scammers typically pose as Customs or police agents, coercing victims into wiring money to their accounts.
This technique now targets. Rohan Joshi, a comedian and founding member of the creative agency AIB, detailed an event involving a fraudster attempting the well-known courier scam. However, a minor slip-up disclosed it.
Joshi shared an Instagram video about what he called the “greatest scam call.” He added that he received a call from someone claiming to be from the Delhi Police and Customs.
The caller stated that Joshi’s Aadhaar card has been linked to cocaine trafficking from Delhi to Cambodia. When Joshi enquired about the specific prescriptions associated with his name, there was a long pause before the man tentatively replied “MMDA.”
Fortunately, Joshi ended the arrangement before any financial harm happened, saving his bank balance. Soon later, viewers started commenting on the video.
One user shared a similar experience, saying, “This occurred to me too! My buddy mentioned MDMA with confidence, but I was thinking, do you even know what you’re talking about? Chal MDMA ka complete form data. The guy was scared and hung up. I received another call a few weeks later and simply asked him if he had come prepared with what MDMA stands for this time, and I believe they have now blocked me.”
