The news of Kathak legend Pandit Birju Maharaj’s death has left the entertainment industry heartbroken

Kathak legend Pandit Birju Maharaj breathed his last at the age of 83. According to the report, the legendary artist passed away due to a heart attack. When the news of Pandit Birju Maharaj sudden expiration came out, social media has been abuzz.

Many Bollywood artists gave their tribute to Pandit Birju Maharaj and mourning for his death on social media.

Madhuri Dixit was one of them who shared a picture with the late Kathak legend and penned a heartfelt remark for him. On her Instagram story, she has shown the picture where she has shared the stage with Pandit Birju Maharaj during a performance. In the caption, Madhuri called the Kathak legend as her guru and friend and stated that he had child like innocence. “He was a legend but had a child like innocence. He was my guru but also my friend. He taught me the intricacies of dance and Abhinay but never failed to make me laugh at his funny anecdotes. He has left behind grieving fans and students but also left a legacy we will all carry forward. Thank you Maharajji for everything you taught me in dance along with humility, elegance and grace,” she expanded. 

Pandit Birju Maharaj was the one who choreographed Madhuri Dixit’s popular song ‘Kaahe Chhed Mohe’ from the film Devdas and ‘Jagaave Saari Raina’ from Dedh Ishqiya. Meanwhile, celebrities like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and other megastars have also shown consolidation to the Kathak legend.

Kamal Haasan paid tribute to the legendary Kathak dancer while sharing a picture with the caption, “The unparalleled dancer has passed away. I have learned from him from afar for many years and a lot while working for Vishwaroopam. He has dedicated his life to music and dance.” He has also honoured him using a line from their song Unnai Kanatha in Vishwaroopam.

Pandit Birju Maharaj has won the National Award for Best Choreographer. Kamal Haasan’s daughter and actress Akshara Haasan also penned a post recalling the late dancer. In the post, it was written, “Pandit Birju Maharajji. I’m truly speechless. This news has broken my heart to know that an angel who was on the earth and made it beautiful with himself in the beautiful art form dance. His true love and passion ignited my soul into the art form and all that I would chose to do. His elegance, grace, power, strength and sensitive nature and in his art form which was in abundance made him the true artist he was. I’m honored, grateful and thankful I got to meet the legend and spend a little bit of time with him. May your soul rest in peace and be happy with your fellow angels.”

An emotional post by Alia Bhatt after hearing the news of 83 year old Pandit Birju Maharaj. She posted a note on her social media handle and said, “Had the honour and privilege of spending three full days with Pandit Birju Maharaj in 2018 while I was prepping for Ghar More Pardesiya. I will never forget all that he has taught me. It was possibly one of the most creative and fulfilling experiences that I have ever had. A legend who has inspired several and will always continue to do so through his art. Truly breaks my heart to write this post today. May his soul rest in peace.”
