Actor Soumitra Chatterjee passed away at the age of 85

Actor Soumitra Chatterjee passed away on Sunday (15th November) after undergoing treatment for COVID-19 and co-morbidities.

Legendary Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee has passed away on Sunday (15th November). He was 85 years old.

The statement released by doctors treating Chatterjee reads, “We declare with a heavy heart that Shri Soumitra Chatterjee breathed his last at 12:15 pm at Belle Vue Clinic today. We pay our homage to his soul.”

The actor had earlier tested positive for COVID-19. Later, he tested negative for the same but his health continued to stay critical due to co-morbidities. He had also undergone a tracheotomy, dialysis, and blood transfusion recently.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner was known for his roles in Satyajit Ray‘s films. He worked in 14 films with the Oscar-winning director. Chatterjee is also the first Indian film personality conferred with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France’s highest award for artists. Until 2016, he acted in more than 210 films. The actor is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.
