Actor Sonam Kapoor appeals to Rajinder Nagar public ‘to vote’

Actor Sonam Kapoor specially appealed to the voters in Rajinder Nagar to turn out for voting in large numbers as the constituency goes to by-polls Thursday.

New Delhi, June 23: Actor Sonam Kapoor on Thursday made a special appeal to voters in Rajinder Nagar to turn out for voting in large numbers as the constituency goes to by-polls Thursday.

Kapoor, who has been chosen as a ‘district icon’ by the New Delhi district. Appealed to the public to cast their votes in the by-election through a video message released by the poll authorities.

The by-election is being conducted after AAP leader Raghav Chadha vacated the seat to become a Rajya Sabha member from Punjab. He was elected to the upper house of the parliament in March.

Direct competition between AAP and BJP is being seen on the seat where the former has fielded Durgesh Pathak to continue its winning streak while the latter has fronted Rajesh Bhatia as its candidate.

Congress is also a contender in this electoral battle and has fielded Prem Lata.

AAP had won this seat for the last two consecutive assembly elections. Vijender Garg Vijay had won the seat in 2015 and it was retained by the party in the 2020 assembly polls with Raghav Chadha.

Total of 26 nominations have been filed for the Rajinder Nagar assembly seat.

A total of 1,64,698 voters are eligible to cast their votes in the Rajinder Nagar constituency. According to the Election Commission. Of the total eligible voters, 92,221 are male, 72,473 are female and four belong to the third gender.

The counting of votes will take place on June 26.
