Vi, India’s leading telecom operator, has announced the launch of India’s first recharge-linked handset theft and loss insurance plans for prepaid customers. The industry-first offering is available for both iOS and Android users and is bundled with select prepaid recharge packs.
Under the new proposition, Vi prepaid customers can claim handset theft or loss protection of up to ₹25,000, with plans starting at ₹61. Vi is currently the only telecom operator in India to offer a recharge-linked handset theft and loss insurance solution.
According to a Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) report published in May 2025, 85.5% of Indian households own at least one smartphone. Industry estimates project the handset insurance market to reach $2.6 billion in 2025, growing at nearly 14% annually, while the cost of replacing a mid-range smartphone typically ranges between ₹20,000 and ₹25,000.
Vi’s handset theft and loss insurance recharge is available through three packs: ₹61 (30 days), ₹201 (180 days), and ₹251 (365 days). These packs offer insurance coverage of up to ₹25,000 along with data benefits.
