State-owned Pawan Hans Limited (PHL) has secured a significant ₹2,141 crore global contract from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to deploy four ‘Make-in-India’ Dhruv NG helicopters for offshore operations. The contract, spanning ten years, marks a milestone for both Pawan Hans and the indigenous Dhruv NG platform, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The Dhruv NG is an advanced version of the ALH Mk III (Advance Light Helicopter) currently in service with the Indian Armed Forces. This contract signifies the first time its civilian version will be used for offshore operations. Featuring ‘Shakti’ engines and a civil-certified glass cockpit, the Dhruv NG brings world-class specifications, promising reliability and cost-effectiveness for offshore missions.

This development strengthens Pawan Hans’ position as a leading offshore services provider. Currently operating a fleet of 46 helicopters, the company caters to sectors like oil and gas exploration, VIP transport, and law enforcement. The deal also highlights HAL’s efforts in enhancing India’s indigenous aviation manufacturing capabilities while supporting Indian MSMEs and local vendors involved in the production ecosystem.

Pawan Hans’ focus on modernization is evident, with plans to replace 17 older helicopters and expand its fleet with financial support from the central government. The Dhruv NG helicopters will play a crucial role in boosting offshore operations for ONGC, further showcasing India’s growing capability to produce and operate state-of-the-art, indigenous aviation platforms.
