Global Health Limited, operating under the brand Medanta, has announced plans to establish a 400-bed multi-specialty hospital in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The decision was made during a board meeting held on March 25, 2026, where the directors approved a definitive agreement with Shripal Hospitality LLP and others for a build-to-suit development and lease arrangement. This strategic expansion aims to enhance Medanta’s presence in Uttar Pradesh, which already includes facilities in Lucknow and Noida.
The new hospital will be developed on a strategically located freehold land parcel in the heart of Varanasi, catering to a population base of over 4 million in the city and surrounding regions. Medanta will invest approximately ₹550 crore in the project, focusing on interior services, fit-outs, and medical equipment, while the civil infrastructure will be developed by the partner in accordance with Medanta’s specifications.
Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director of Medanta, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the cultural and spiritual significance of Varanasi. He emphasised Medanta’s commitment to providing advanced healthcare in densely populated regions, aligning with the organisation’s philosophy of delivering high-quality, patient-centric care.
The proposed hospital will address the growing demand for tertiary care in Varanasi and serve as a key healthcare hub for Eastern Uttar Pradesh. This expansion is expected to strengthen Medanta’s market positioning in the state, building on the foundation established by its existing hospitals.
Pankaj Sahni, Group CEO of Medanta, noted the strategic importance of this expansion, acknowledging Varanasi as an underserved market for quality healthcare. He pointed out that the city currently lacks access to high-quality tertiary care, with many existing facilities operating on a smaller scale. The new hospital aims to fill this gap by bringing best-in-class clinical expertise and comprehensive care closer to the local population.
Upon completion, the Varanasi hospital will contribute to Medanta’s goal of becoming one of the largest private hospital networks in Uttar Pradesh, with a total capacity of approximately 1,900 beds.
