Private sector lender HDFC Bank on Sunday reported that its services have been restored after a sudden outage at one of its data centres disrupted its digital and mobile banking and ATM and payment services on Saturday evening. “The services impacted following the outage have been restored. While you may face intermittent issues as the system stabilises there is no reason to worry now,” the bank said in a tweet on Sunday.
HDFC Bank had earlier traced the source of the problem to be an unexpected outage at one of its data centres. The issue came to light when a large number of customers had complained that they were unable to make payments through HDFC Bank credit cards and UPI, use ATM services, and access their internet and mobile banking services. The bank had on November 21 informed customers in advance that due to scheduled maintenance activity, Net Banking and Mobile Banking App will not be available from 2:30 AM to 5:30 AM on Sunday. However, the outage was independent of the maintenance activity. While the cause for the compromised data centres has not been stated, the said outage is said to have lasted for more than 12 hours. According to the trends by Down Detector, complaints started coming in at 6 PM, and peaked about 8 PM.
India’s largest private sector lender also noted that the customers may continue to face sporadic issues as the system stabilizes itself. “The services impacted following the outage have been restored. While you may face intermittent issues as the system stabilizes there is no reason to worry now! Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for bearing with us during this period,” said a tweet by the bank.
