The GMR Group and JSW Group have announced a collaborative plan to manage the cricketing operations of the Delhi Capitals IPL (Men’s) and Delhi Capitals WPL (Women’s) teams on a two-year rotational basis. This strategic move is aimed at improving operational efficiency within the franchise, which is co-owned by both groups.
For the next two years, the GMR Group will oversee the operations of the Delhi Capitals Men’s team, while JSW Sports will take charge of the Delhi Capitals Women’s team. In 2027, the roles will switch, with JSW managing the Men’s team and GMR handling the Women’s team. The business operations, however, will remain under the control of the Delhi Capitals’ management team.
Key decisions such as auctions, captaincy, player retentions, and player releases for both teams will be made by the Delhi Capitals board, with the final call being mutually agreed upon by senior leadership from both GMR and JSW.
The GMR Group has been a part of the IPL since its inception in 2008 when it launched the team as Delhi Daredevils. In 2018, GMR partnered with JSW Sports in a 50:50 ownership structure, leading to the rebranding of the team as Delhi Capitals. The franchise has reached several IPL playoffs, with its best finish in 2020, when it made its first appearance in the final.
The Delhi Capitals Women’s team, acquired in 2023, has been equally successful, making it to the final in both editions of the Women’s Premier League.
Outside of India, GMR and JSW also manage teams in other leagues. The Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 League are run by GMR, while Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 South African League are managed by JSW Sports.
