Elon Musk has appointed Anthony Armstrong, a former Morgan Stanley banker, as the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of his artificial intelligence venture, xAI, according to a report by the Financial Times.
Armstrong will succeed Mike Liberatore, who left the company in July 2025. As per the report, Armstrong will oversee finance operations for both xAI and the social media platform X, further strengthening the financial alignment between Musk’s AI initiatives and his broader tech ecosystem.
The report adds that Armstrong has been working with xAI for the past several weeks and was formally appointed to the CFO position recently. His move marks another addition to Musk’s expanding team of former Wall Street executives as the billionaire accelerates xAI’s development to rival OpenAI and other leading AI firms.
xAI, launched in 2023, aims to build advanced generative AI systems integrated with X (formerly Twitter) and Tesla’s ecosystem. The appointment of Armstrong highlights Musk’s intent to professionalize financial operations across his AI and media holdings as the company prepares for further funding and product expansion.
