Mozilla will lay off approximately 250 people(Nearly 25%) and shut down its operations in Taipei, Taiwan, the company said in a blog post uploaded on Tuesday. Mozilla CEO Mitchell Baker told employees that the company’s pre-COVID plan was no longer workable, as the economic conditions resulting from the pandemic had significantly impacted their revenue. Besides the layoffs, around 60 people from the organization would also have to change teams.

In the blog post, Baker reported that the business will be smaller going forward. Mozilla plans to work
outside of Firefox on a new software company to invest in Pocket, Hubs, VPN, Network Assembly, and
security and privacy products.

By December 31, 2020, the nearly 250 laid-off workers will receive severance pay which is at least equal to full base pay. Baker emphasized the action was not a comment on personal or professional values in any way. She said the company didn’t view those decisions as a way to get through the next few months but instead looked at what Mozilla had to do in order to be successful and have an impact over time. To do this the company was reshaped.
