Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. has achieved a major milestone in India’s urban mobility journey with the rollout of its first fully driverless, Made-in-India metro trainset for the Ahmedabad Metro project. The trainset has been delivered to Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation from Titagarh’s state-of-the-art Passenger Rail Systems facility in Uttarpara, West Bengal, marking a significant step in indigenous rail manufacturing.

The rollout ceremony was graced by Bhupendrabhai Patel, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat, who described the programme as a key enabler of Gujarat’s fast-evolving urban transport vision. He was accompanied by senior state leadership including Hasmukh Adia and S. S. Rathod, Advisor and Managing Director of Gujarat Metro.

Manufactured with advanced stainless-steel car bodies, the new metro trainsets are designed to be lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and highly durable, offering improved energy efficiency and long-term sustainability. These driverless trains will operate across the Yellow Line corridor from Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, covering 23.8 km, along with the Violet Line branch connecting Gujarat National Law University, Pandit Deendayal Energy University and GIFT City over an additional 5.4 km. Together, the Phase-2 network will span a 28.26 km elevated corridor connecting 22 stations across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

The trainsets are equipped with the latest Train Control and Management System, enabling fully automated, driverless operations while ensuring high standards of safety and reliability. Passenger comfort has been given equal importance, with ergonomically designed interiors, modern onboard amenities, and dedicated spaces for Persons with Reduced Mobility to ensure inclusive and seamless travel. Adding a distinct local touch, the interiors feature a Garba-inspired theme that reflects Ahmedabad’s cultural heritage and vibrant identity.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel highlighted that the rollout reflects the realisation of the Prime Minister’s vision of Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. He noted that the expansion of metro infrastructure across the country, which has grown from 248 km to over 1,013 km, has been instrumental in transforming India’s urban mobility landscape, with Gujarat playing a leading role in this progress.

Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems, said the company is honoured to deliver a driverless metro trainset that has been engineered and manufactured in India with approximately 70–75 percent local content by value. He added that the project underlines India’s growing strength in indigenous manufacturing and reinforces Titagarh’s commitment to making the country a global hub for railway and rolling stock production through innovation, technical excellence, and disciplined execution.
