Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, has taken a significant step toward sustainable energy development in Assam. At the prestigious Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Assam Government to develop up to 5000 MW of renewable energy projects. This initiative, backed by an investment of ₹30,000 crore over the next five years, will focus on solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage solutions, accelerating Assam’s transition to clean energy.
The agreement was formalized in the presence of Assam’s Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with senior officials. Under this collaboration, the state government will provide approximately 20,000 acres of encumbrance-free land on a lease basis while facilitating private land acquisitions. Assam will also enhance infrastructure to ensure seamless power transmission and establish Renewable Energy Parks through state agencies.
Further strengthening its commitment to green energy, Tata Power’s subsidiary, Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, has entered another MoU with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL). This partnership will drive renewable energy adoption across the state, particularly through rooftop solar projects under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY). Additionally, it will create 3000 direct job opportunities, contributing to Assam’s economic and sustainable growth.
Assam, rich in renewable energy resources, has set ambitious clean energy targets. With a renewable energy potential of 14,487 MW, the state aims to achieve 500 MW of solar capacity by 2027. Tata Power’s investment and expertise align with Assam’s vision, offering industries and tea gardens access to clean energy through group captive sites. The government has pledged to fast-track approvals, provide financial incentives, and promote research collaborations to ensure efficient project execution.
Tata Power has already established a strong presence in Assam with a 20 MW solar rooftop capacity, over 300 EV home chargers, and more than 20 public EV charging stations. Through these initiatives, the company continues to drive India’s energy transition, reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable and net-zero future.
