SJVN has taken a major step forward in its power expansion journey with the successful commencement of commercial operations for Unit-1 of the Buxar Thermal Power Project. The company informed that its wholly owned subsidiary, SJVN Thermal Private Limited, achieved the Commercial Operation Date (COD) for the 660 MW unit today, marking a key milestone under SEBI’s Regulation 30 disclosure requirements.
The Buxar Thermal Power Project, located at Chausa in Bihar’s Buxar district, has a total capacity of 1320 MW with two units of 660 MW each. Developed with advanced supercritical technology, the project is designed to deliver higher operational efficiency while keeping emissions and environmental impact comparatively lower. Once both units are fully operational, the plant is expected to generate close to 9,828.72 million units of electricity every year.
A majority of the power generated—about 85 percent—has already been allocated to Bihar through a long-term Power Purchase Agreement. This allocation is set to significantly improve electricity availability across the state, particularly during peak demand periods, and will contribute to greater energy stability in the eastern region of the country. With this development, SJVN strengthens its role in supporting India’s growing power needs and improving regional energy security.
