Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), through its joint venture RVNL-GPT JV, has emerged as the Lowest Bidder (L1) for a major infrastructure project awarded by Northern Railway. The project involves the design and construction of a new rail cum road bridge over the river Ganga in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant step in strengthening rail and road connectivity in the region.
The new bridge will be constructed approximately 50 meters downstream of the existing Old Malviya Bridge near Kashi Railway Station. It is designed as a multi-modal infrastructure asset, featuring four railway lines on the lower deck and a six-lane roadway on the upper deck. The bridge structure will comprise eight spans of 108.5 meters and two spans of 103.3 meters using open web steel girders, along with complete substructure and superstructure works.
As part of the scope, the project also includes railway and road approaches as per the approved General Arrangement Drawing (GAD), along with associated Overhead Equipment (OHE) works and general electrical works. The execution will fall under the Lucknow Division of Northern Railway, further underlining its strategic importance for rail operations in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The total project cost stands at ₹1,201.36 crore, inclusive of all applicable taxes. The contract is domestic in nature and is governed by standard General Contract Conditions. The stipulated execution period for the project is 48 months from the date of award.
In the RVNL-GPT joint venture, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited holds a 60% stake, while GPT Infraprojects Limited holds the remaining 40%. There is no involvement of promoters or promoter group entities in the awarding authority, and the contract does not fall under related party transactions, confirming that it has been awarded on an arm’s length basis.
