India’s state-owned energy major Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on January 5, 2026, confirmed an incident of gas leakage during workover operations at Well Mori#5 in the Mori Field located in Andhra Pradesh. The incident was reported to ONGC by the PEC operator Deep Industries Limited, which is currently handling operations at the site.

As per the information shared, the well is located in a remote area with no human habitation within an approximate radius of 500–600 metres. ONGC stated that no injuries or loss of life have been reported in connection with the gas leak.

Following the incident, the surrounding area was cordoned off as a safety measure, and cooling operations were initiated. ONGC has mobilised its Crisis Management Teams, including CMT and RCMT, to manage the situation and coordinate response activities.

The company said preparatory work is underway to carry out well-control operations. If required, capping of the well will be undertaken based on technical assessment. ONGC has also initiated coordination with international well-control specialists, including arrangements for mobilisation to support advanced well-control and casing-cutting operations, subject to site evaluation.

ONGC’s senior management and technical teams are monitoring the situation. Additional equipment is being mobilised from nearby locations, including Narsapuram, to support ongoing operations.
