Oil India Limited (OIL) has successfully capped Well KSG#76 at the Kharsang Oil Field in Arunachal Pradesh, nearly three weeks after a blowout triggered uncontrolled gas discharge during service operations. According to the company’s official press release dated November 22, 2025, the high-risk operation marks a major milestone in OIL’s well-control capabilities.

The blowout occurred on October 30, 2025, after which OIL’s Crisis Management Team (CMT), along with experts from Cudd Well Control (USA) and GeoEnpro Petroleum Ltd, took control of the site on November 1. The team’s first challenge involved safely removing the damaged Blowout Preventer (BOP) from the wellhead — a task completed with what the release describes as “precision, expertise and seamless coordination.”

With the damaged BOP removed, engineers installed the pre-positioned capping stack on the wellhead. This redirected the gas flow securely to the top of the stack, allowing full containment. Once the stack was stabilised, the BOP was successfully shut, bringing the gas discharge from Well 76 to a complete stop.

The company highlighted the operation as a testament to its engineering acumen, detailed planning and teamwork across global specialists and local field crews. Subsequent phases of the well-control roadmap will now proceed as per protocol.

OIL also expressed gratitude to the Arunachal Pradesh district and state administration, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, and local communities for their support throughout the operation. The release concludes by reaffirming the company’s commitment to safe, sustainable and efficient operations across all its projects.
