A significant landslide occurred today at NHPC’s 510 MW Teesta-V Power Station in Sikkim, causing additional damage to the already affected site. The incident took place at 7:30 AM near the Balutar dam site, close to Singtam town, and has impacted the Tail Race Tunnel (TRT) outlet structure and the GIS building of the power station.
NHPC has dispatched an expert team from its Corporate Office to assess the situation, evaluate the extent of the damage, and plan the necessary remedial work, the company said in an exchange filing.
The area surrounding the Teesta Basin has been experiencing periodic natural subsidence and landslides during the ongoing monsoon season, exacerbating the situation at the power station, which is currently non-operational. The station has been undergoing restoration work following the flash flood in October 2023.
In addition to the damage at the power station, the landslide has also affected six residential houses in the vicinity and caused significant cracks along the Singtam-Dikchu road, making it inaccessible.
