Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has informed the stock exchanges that it has defaulted on the payment of principal instalments and interest to multiple banks as of its latest disclosure dated October 31, 2025. The communication was filed under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (LODR) Regulations, 2015, and the SEBI circular dated November 21, 2019.
According to the filing, MTNL has continued to default on dues owed to seven lenders — Union Bank of India, Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, UCO Bank, Punjab and Sind Bank, and Indian Overseas Bank. The banks had classified the accounts as non-performing assets (NPAs) between August 2024 and February 2025.

The total current default amount stands at ₹7,794.34 crore in overdue principal and ₹1,087.14 crore in overdue interest, aggregating to ₹8,881.48 crore in outstanding obligations to banks.

MTNL confirmed that the total principal obligation for these bank borrowings currently stands at ₹8,881 crore.
Overall debt position
The filing also states that MTNL’s total financial indebtedness is ₹35,167 crore, comprising:
- Bank loans: ₹8,881 crore
- Sovereign guarantee (SG) bonds: ₹24,071 crore
- Loan from DoT for paying SG bond interest: ₹2,215 crore
Regulatory communication
The telecom PSU noted that this disclosure follows a series of earlier intimations made throughout 2024 and 2025 regarding ongoing defaults.
